I grew up in South Tyrol, Italy. I went on to study Genetics at the University of Vienna, where I first became interested in developmental signalling pathways that malfunction during disease states. I then went on to do a PhD at ETH Zuerich studying the role of the Hippo signalling pathway in organ size control in the lab of Prof. Ernst Hafen. In July 2012 I joined JP Vincent’s lab as a PostDoc. Here, I use fly embryos and imaginal discs as a models to study the activation of the Jun amino-terminal kinases (JNK) pathway upon epithelial disruption.
JNK signalling regulates several important cellular functions including cell growth, differentiation, survival and apoptosis, but relatively little is known regarding the upstream events involved in JNK pathway activation. During my PostDoc I will focus on understanding how the loss of epithelial integrity, a hallmark of cancer, leads to JNK pathway activation.
